VI INTERNATIONAL LEEVI MADETOJA MALE VOICE CHOIR COMPETITION

RULES

VENUE AND DATE
The VI International Leevi Madetoja Male Voice Choir Competition will be held at Tampere Hall (Yliopistonkatu 55, Tampere, Finland) on Saturday 18 April 2015.

PARTICIPANTS
The competition will have an international series, a national series and a review series. Choirs from abroad and professional singers can participate only in the international series. Amateur choirs from Finland can participate in any series.

The competition organiser has the right to limit the number of participating choirs in each series. The participants will be confirmed in order of registration.

COMPETITION PROGRAMME
International series
The maximum duration of the choir's repertoire, transfers included, is 15 minutes. The repertoire shall be a cappella music, but compositions may include pitchless percussion instruments. The repertoire is free, but it shall include:
  • a mandatory composition by Leevi Madetoja: Hiiren peiaat (Mössets begravningskalas; Mäuslein ladet zum Leichenschmaus) op. 62:3 (1925) (publisher: YL Male Voice Choir, sales: Sulasol Sheet Music Shop, , tel. +358-10-8200221)
  • a composition by a living composer from the country of the choir
The performance language is free, including the mandatory composition.

National series (only for Finnish choirs)
The maximum duration of the choir's repertoire, transfers included, is 15 minutes. The repertoire shall be a cappella music, but compositions may include pitchless percussion instruments. The repertoire is free, but it shall include:
  • a mandatory composition by Leevi Madetoja: Soita somer, helkä hiekka (Klinga grus, och sand, du klirra; Halle wider, Schritt am Strande) op. 33:5 (1917) (publisher: YL Male Voice Choir, sales: Sulasol Sheet Music Shop, , tel. +358-10-8200221)
  • a composition by a living Finnish composer
The performance language is free, including the mandatory composition.

Review series (only for Finnish choirs)
The maximum duration of the choir's repertoire, transfers included, is 10 minutes. The choir will receive oral feedback from the jury immediately after the performance. The repertoire may include accompanying instruments at the responsibility of the choir. The repertoire is free, but it shall include:
  • a mandatory composition: any male voice choir composition by Leevi Madetoja
The performance language is free, including the mandatory composition.

REGISTRATION
The participants shall register for the competition by 31 December 2014 on the e-form at the web address www.mieskuoro.fi/madetoja2015. The registration form opens on 1 January 2014.

In addition the choir shall send by 31 December 2014 the following documents to the organiser's e-mail address :
  • a presentation of the choir in Finnish, Swedish or English (file format doc, docx or pdf)
  • a presentation of the choir's conductor in Finnish, Swedish or English (file format doc, docx or pdf)
  • 2 photographs of the choir (file format jpg, minimum width 1,500 pixels)
  • 2 photographs of the choir's conductor (file format jpg, minimum width 1,500 pixels)
and via regular mail to Suomen Mieskuoroliitto, Klaneettitie 6-8, FI-00420 Helsinki:
  • legal sheet music (original published sheet music or manuscript copies approved by the compositor) of the choir's competition repertoire.

PARTICIPATION FEE
The fee for participation in the competition is in the international series EUR 400, in the national series EUR 300 and in the review series EUR 200. The participation fee will be invoiced after the registration period.

If a choir cancels its participation, the registration fee will not be returned. Each choir is responsible for its own travel, accommodation and other expenses.

JURY
The board of the Finnish Male Choir Association (Suomen Mieskuoroliitto) will for each series appoint a jury which in addition to a chairperson includes at least two other members.

All competitors will receive written feedback from the jury after the competition.

COMPETITION ORDER AND GALA CONCERT
The competition organiser will randomly draw the order of performance in each series. The participants will receive the exact competition schedule no later than a month prior to the event.

The choirs that the jury selects to the competition's gala concert at Tampere Hall on Saturday evening 18 April 2015 are obliged to perform at the concert without separate compensation.

PRIZES
The total prize sum in the competition's international series is EUR 5,000 and in the national series EUR 2,500. Money prizes will not be awarded in the review series. Special prizes that have been approved by the board of the Finnish Male Choir Association can also be awarded in the competition.

SHEET MUSIC
Only legal sheet music is allowed in the competition (original published sheet music or manuscript copies approved by the compositor). The organiser has the right to inspect the legality of the sheet music.

RECORDINGS
The competition organiser has an unlimited right to record, photograph, video-record and to broadcast in radio, television or on the Internet any of the competition's performances and concerts without separate compensation. The competition organiser can also transfer any of the above rights to another party.


The board of the Finnish Male Choir Association has confirmed the rules on 9 February 2013. The original language of the rules is Finnish, and the board of the Finnish Male Choir Association will interpret the rules according to the version in Finnish.
